The Challenge of Settling Back Into Routine: Supporting Children Through Transitions
Whether it is adults or children, settling back into routines can often feel challenging. During this time, it’s essential to practice kindness, not only towards others but also toward ourselves. Everyone’s experience is personal, and what might feel easy for one person could be difficult for another. Listening becomes a key part of supporting those around us, allowing others to feel heard and understood.
When it comes to supporting children, especially as they return to school or start something new, it’s crucial to help them build the tools they need to manage any worries they may have. It can be tempting for adults to offer reassurance like, “Don’t worry, it will be okay,” with the best of intentions. However, while this may come from a place of caring, it can unintentionally make children feel that their concerns are invalid, which can actually heighten their anxiety.
Instead of brushing aside their feelings, we should aim to validate their emotions, showing empathy and reminding them of the challenges they have already overcome in the past. By offering this kind of support, we help them feel safe in expressing their worries. This way, they’re better equipped to face the transition ahead, knowing they have the tools and support to navigate challenges, rather than avoiding them. If your child would benefit from more specific support, please don’t hesitate to reach out or email me. I’m here to help.
